As an Afro-Indigenous mother born and raised in the Bronx, I know that navigating maternal healthcare as a person of color can come with its own challenges. Too often, people are dismissed, their instincts are questioned, and normal experiences are treated like problems that need to be fixed. That’s a big part of why I do this work. I want families to know their rights, understand their options, and feel empowered to make decisions about their own bodies and their own births. My journey into birth work began eight years ago after the birth of my son and deepened through my experience as a gestational surrogate and, most recently, the birth of my daughter this past summer.
