**Katie Shepherd, RN | Roots & Renewal** *Compassionate Postpartum Support • Newborn Care • Breastfeeding Guidance • Holistic Family Wellness* Hello, I'm Katie! I'm a registered nurse, mother of three, and the heart behind Roots & Renewal. With over 25 years of healthcare experience, including 18 years dedicated to labor and delivery, mother-baby nursing, and women's health, I've had the privilege of supporting families through some of life's most beautiful, vulnerable, and transformative moments. I believe that caring for a new baby should also mean caring for the person who brought that baby into the world. My approach combines evidence-informed nursing knowledge with nurturing, individualized support. Whether you're navigating newborn care, finding your rhythm with breastfeeding, recovering from childbirth, or simply needing someone experienced and compassionate by your side, I'm here to help. **How I Can Support Your Family** - **Postpartum Care:** Emotional support, recovery education, reassurance, and practical guidance as you adjust to life after birth. - **Breastfeeding Support:** Guidance with positioning, latch, feeding routines, and common breastfeeding concerns, informed by professional education and my personal experience breastfeeding three children. - **Newborn Care Education:** Helping families build confidence with feeding, soothing, diapering, safe sleep, and understanding their baby's cues. - **Family Advocacy:** Helping you prepare questions, understand care instructions, and feel empowered to communicate with your healthcare team. - **Holistic Wellness:** Optional Reiki and relaxation practices to support rest, connection, and emotional well-being. I understand that every family, every birth, and every postpartum experience is different. My role isn't to tell you how to parent. It's to help you discover what works for you while offering knowledge, encouragement, and a steady hand when you need one. You deserve to feel supported, heard, and cared for during this season of life. **Come as you are. Grow from where you're planted.** *Serving families in North Carolina through Roots & Renewal. In-person and virtual support options available.*

We did the Sacredsong package with Gabe. I wish that everyone could have access to the support that Gabe provided during our prenatal, birth and postpartum experience. She answered all of our many questions through out and offered answers to the questions we didn't even know to ask. We felt as prepared as we could be before the birth. And when baby came a couple weeks early Gabe was great at helping over the phone during contractions then transition to the hospital for the birth. She helped guide me and my spouse throughout the contractions and into the birth of our first child. She made sure we understood and communicated clearly with the midwives through out. My spouse and I are incredibly grateful she was our support person for the birth and then for postpartum. The follow up session a few days after we got home was really helpful to be able to talk through and process the birth. She was great at teaching my partner how to belly bind and guide them to help support my recovery. If we decide to have another child Gabe would be one of the first people we reached out to to get back on her books. And I have already recommended her to a couple friends. My husband wanted me to add that he felt without Gabe there to support him he would have had a more difficult time. But Gabe was able to support both of us and so he was able to be more mentally and physically present especially during the hardest parts of labor.

Taylor Smith

Maternal–infant health professional with extensive experience supporting families across the prenatal, perinatal, and postpartum continuum of care. I bring a service-oriented, patient-centered approach grounded in evidence-based lactation care, interdisciplinary collaboration, and culturally responsive support. I am an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and Interdisciplinary Doula with hands-on experience in inpatient hospital settings, community-based programs, and private practice. My work has included high-acuity inpatient lactation support, home-based maternal–infant care coordination, peer counseling, and program development serving diverse and Medicaid-insured populations. Throughout my career, I have partnered closely with nurses, midwives, physicians, and community organizations to improve breastfeeding outcomes, strengthen continuity of care, and expand access to maternal health resources. I am highly skilled in client education, crisis-sensitive communication, documentation, data tracking, and managing complex caseloads while maintaining compassion and accuracy. In addition to direct care, I have experience in advocacy and systems-level work, including Medicaid reform initiatives, doula workforce development, volunteer training, and curriculum creation. I am comfortable operating in both clinical and non-clinical environments and bring strong organizational, technical, and communication skills to every role. I am currently pursuing my Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN, RN) while continuing to advance my work in maternal–infant health. I am passionate about improving care delivery, strengthening health equity, and supporting families during one of the most critical periods of their lives.
