Clarissa Alves

3 years of experience

I am Clarissa Alves, a certified doula and the heart behind Mooncradle Matrescence. My philosophy for birth work is rooted in bodily autonomy, informed consent, and deep respect for each family’s lived experience. As an Afro Indigenous mother, born in the Bronx and navigating the maternal healthcare system as a person of color, I understand how systems can fail families, silence intuition, and pathologize normal experiences. My work is grounded in decolonizing birth, honoring ancestral wisdom alongside evidence based care, and creating spaces where people feel seen, protected, and empowered to make choices that are right for them. I believe birth is not something to be controlled, but something to be supported, whether that looks like an unmedicated birth, a cesarean, a VBAC, or postpartum healing. My role is to hold space without judgment, provide honest education, and walk alongside families with compassion, reverence, and unwavering advocacy.

Having Clarissa as my doula was truly a once in a lifetime experience! Straight from the beginning, she was there for me throughout my entire pregnancy. Whatever questions I had, she helped me answer. She also helped me create a personalized birth plan step by step. When my water broke, I called her immediately and she was on her way. She showed up with things to decorate my hospital room, as well as pain management items, and a peanut & labor ball. Ambient lighting, oil diffuser, and words of affirmation on cards. These things really helped set the tone for my whole labor. As I progressed, I got good use out of all the pain relief items Clarissa brought. My personal favorite was the TENS machine and comb. Clarissa also made sure to advocate for my wants, needs, and rights as a patient. This truly meant a lot to me, as I feared a hospital birth due to hearing about mistreatment of new mothers who aren’t fully aware of their rights. As I started experiencing more intense pain, Clarissa jumped into action to help with pressure points and positioning my body in a way to ease pain. She helped me with breathing techniques and ways to move my hip on the birthing ball she brought along. All of these things made such a tremendous impact on how beautiful my whole experience was. Clarissa was right there squeezing my hand tight, holding my leg, and cheering me along so I knew I was able to do this. That was the strength I needed. Finally, my daughter was born! Clarissa made sure I got immediate skin-to-skin and a good deep latch to kick off my breastfeeding journey. We both laughed and cried when my daughter came out, it was truly one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve ever had! Throughout my postpartum weeks, Clarissa made sure to check in with me daily as she did when I was pregnant to assure I was doing okay, and to answer any general questions I had about breastfeeding, postpartum care, and being a new mom in general! All her advice was so helpful. Choosing Clarissa as my doula was one of the best decisions I could have made. If you want an individualized experience with someone who is passionate about helping moms, Clarissa is the perfect person for that!

Hi there, Friend! I became a doula, because I realized my passion for prenatal care, birth, and postpartum support was not departing after my own experiences. My goal is to be able to help and support other women in my community. I desire to have them experience excitement and confidence in themselves that I hope leaves them encouraged. I have been through three pregnancies myself and have walked alongside many friends and family members journeys. I live in the tranquil countryside of Northern NJ, about 5 minutes away from the borders of Upstate NY and PA and only 90 minutes away from NYC! My husband of 10 years and myself were born and raised in Sussex County. We love where we live as it is quiet, beautiful, and allows us to continue our dreams of one day having our own homestead. We look forward to raising our three beautiful children here as well. As a collegiate business major and previous elementary/middle school educator, communication, organization, learning, and teaching are very important to me. Volunteering my time frequently allows my empathetic attributes to selflessly serve others and walk alongside my neighbors, peers, friends, and family. In my free time, I love being outside and active with people near and dear to me. I love to garden, take care of our chickens, cook, bake sour-dough, play board games, take hikes, and watch the occasional football game! When it is just my husband and I, you would find us reading or enjoying a nice conversation by the fire or outside in nature on the deck! I cannot wait to connect with you and hear about your journey into motherhood! Through communication, support, and love I am confident and hopeful to be able to come alongside you so you can experience strength, dignity, and laughter in all your maternal moments! XOXO

Tammy is the best member you could ever add to your postpartum team. She’s worth every single penny. We first met online, due to her strong supportive presence on local Facebook community groups. She’s a connector and positive networker. I was new to the area in my 3rd trimester and she made a huge impression on me. I requested a free consultation over the phone due to a wonderful job presenting itself at 4 weeks postpartum. I wanted to see what she thought. She’s a veteran mother herself for over a decade now and her experience and advice helped me not worry should I choose to take the job. We then discussed her coming on as a team member… while I was away for said job! Her sensitive and confident approach of helping my newborn daughter, my toddler daughter, my husband, and my sister (who came in to help), made myself feel more confident to leave for the dream job. Even weeks leading up to baby girl’s arrival, we strategized breastmilk calculations and anticipated all outcomes of birth with positive affirmations. And when the time came for me to go away for 8 days, I never worried for a second. My newborn and my entire family were in wonderful hands. I even came home to a neater, cleaner home! Hire Tammy. She’s now a forever friend, too.

Literally the best doula out there! She’s so dedicated and passionate about her work and always there for you at anytime when you have questions, she’s so kind and gentle and very very informative! She traveled all the way to Maine for the birth of my son, she came early then expected because I was having so many false labor scares that she came a whole two weeks early just so she could be there! My family holds so much love for Her and we will be definitely having her again for a doula

— Jenna B., review of Clarissa Alves July 2026

Ashley is Amazing , compassionate, understanding , flexible, patient and loving. I love and value that she advocates for my wants and needs. Her being a mommy and woman herself shines through how well she really relates to what are all the motions and vulnerability we experience during birth that i never really even knew to pay attention to until I met with Ashley. Alongside her compassion she doesnt ignore core values of your beliefs and expectations as planet fitness would say she gives that judge free zone, or we listen and we don't judge. Im Thankful and grateful to have crossed paths with the heaven sent angel she is, forseeking and wanting to experience a doula since learning about them im glad she was matched with me to give me an unforgettable experience for what is my first pregnancy with Twins but also my final pregnancy/labor & Birth experience. We Love and Thank You So much Ashley The Best Doula Anyone can ask for 💛
