Greetings, I’m Theodora! I’m a first generation Ghanaian-American postpartum doula serving families in Washington, DC and parts of Northern Virginia. I trained as a full-spectrum doula and started my doula practice in Brooklyn, NYC in 2018. Since then I have supported birthing and postpartum women, people, and their families on their journeys in Richmond, Virginia and now in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area. My doula practice is also shaped by my West African background. I come from a big Ghanaian family and diaspora community, where community care is how we care for each other through life’s transitions, especially birth and postpartum. I believe that birth should be your way and every person should be informed to make the best decisions for you and baby. I create a judgement free zone for both birthers and support persons while fully supporting educationally, physically and emotionally. My name is Traequanda Brock and my interest in birth and postpartum doula work came about during my graduate studies in the social work program. I have been in the social work field since 2011 and graduated from Howard University with my Master of Social Work degree. I have always been passionate about equity, especially for those who are marginalized. I learned of the disparity among black women/black birthing persons and the rate at which they weren’t surviving due to birth related complications, that are completely preventable when given the right care. As I learned the huge impact doulas could have on the life of black women/black birthing persons, I knew where my calling was leading me. I am trained through the National Black Doula Association as a birth and postpartum doula. I know that my purpose is to be of service to others and that so happens to be in this field. My interest is for birthing persons to get back in touch with their bodies and all that it can do. This looks like, trusting yourselves and tapping into your intuition, nurturing your mind, body, and soul; with the nutrients you feed it, exercise, meditation, ancestral traditions; as well as leaning on your supports through this beautiful experience.

I am in the process of certifying as a full-spectrum doula through Doula Trainings International. After ten years as a high school teacher in Washington, DC, I am excited for a change. After witnessing a friend's birth and tending to a loved one in the hospital, I realized that doula work was calling to me. Born in Washington, DC, and I currently travel to families in Maryland, DC, Virginia, and the Atlanta region of Georgia as an Ancient Songs Certified Full Spectrum Community Doula. I’ve been in the perinatal and birth worker space since 2007, and in 2020, I became a Certified End of Life Doula in order to be polycentric for families and friends, and to expound my knowledge and field set as a mediator and facilitator. I come for a federal government and nonprofit background and later I decided to pivot into consulting, advocacy work and lobby. Since 2015, I have served clients as a Birth and Postpartum Doula. In 2021, I became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). I have served over 80 clients having vaginal births after caesarean (VBAC)  planned/unplanned C-sections, vaginal medicated and unmedicated births. I assisted close to 150 families as a postpartum doula, helping them adjust to parenthood with daytime or nighttime visits. I love assisting at births but the greatest joy for me is postpartum work. Families are under prepared for the changes that come during the first 3 months after birth. Having a guide makes the 4th trimester much smoother.

I’m Kathy Peacock. I started my birth work journey as a student doula during nursing school at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. I attended many births as a doula including a couple home births and fell in love with it. I worked as an ICU nurse for a couple years, then, at my first prenatal visit with my own midwife, she learned I was a nurse and a doula and she said “Why not go back to school to become a midwife? We need more midwives!” The seed was planted and after a somewhat complicated pregnancy with surgery for a herniated disc in my back and getting the best care and a smooth home birth, I decided women deserve great care and I could be the one to provide it. I attended the Nurse-Midwife/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner program at Georgetown University and did my last two rotations catching babies with a home birth practice and graduated in 2015. I worked as a birth assistant for a local home birth midwife for a year before joining another home birth practice as a full scope midwife. I worked with that practice for 5 years and attended over 200 births and provided care to more than 500 families. The pandemic threw a wrench in my plans and I decided to step away from midwifery to home school my kids for a couple years. In 2022, I eased my way back into midwifery as an adjunct professor teaching midwifery skills at Georgetown University. I then took a clinic position working with underserved populations providing prenatal care, gyn care and family planning. But I missed home birth! I started Peacock Midwifery Services because I like working in a smaller home birth practice where I can give specialized and individualized care to all of my clients and their families. I’ve lived in Takoma Park and more recently Silver Spring since 2006. Both my kids were born at home with midwives, my first in 2011 and my second in 2013. I co-parent my kids with my ex partner and live with my cat, Missy.
