After spending a decade abroad running a foster home/cardiac surgery program for babies with complex congenital heart defects and maternal/fetal health programs for at-risk indigenous families, I unexpectedly found myself stuck in New York City in early 2020, waiting out this little bug called "Covid-19" that was shutting borders all around the world... I certified as a birth & postpartum doula in the USA in 2020, to be with my best friend for the birth of her first child in the midst of Covid protocols. I never could have imagined how much I would fall in love with birthwork here in the United States and it is the greatest honor to walk alongside families as they grow and change (in whatever capacity!), providing unbiased & judgment-free support, advocacy, guidance, and care during such intimate and pivotal moments.

Throughout my entire pregnancy, I was super nervous and anxious because the thought of actually giving birth and delivering a child terrified me. A doula never really occurred to me as I never really knew what they were, until one of my coworkers who knew I was 5 months pregnant at the time brought up how she knew of a Doula. Destiny really explained to me what they do and the kinds of services a doula can provide, and it really interested me given through what I was going through during the time, . Working with her turned out to be one of the best decisions I made for me and my baby. From the very first meeting to our last, Destiny has been a pleasure to have as my doula and has made this process a lot lighter for me. She is a great person to talk to and ask any question to becuase she makes you feel comfortable and easy to talk to about any birth and post labor concerns. She provided a home cooked meal post labor and it was absolutely delicious ! But most importantly, she made every effort to ensure a safe space , and a memorable labor. when it was that time and I truly don't think it would've went the way it did had she not been my doula. Even after my son was born, she continued to check in on me, trying to just make sure I was adjusting well emotionally just as much as physically and that's how I know that she's someone who truly cares and has a love and passion to what she does. That meant so much to me because most people only focus on the baby and just forget about the mother lol, but she never forgot to remind me that the mom was just as important. More people would benefit from the services of a doula, especially her. If you're looking for someone who will treat you like family, I couldn't recommend her more. She is exactly the kind of person you want besides you during such a life changing experience.

She helped us create our birth plan, taught us different exercises, positions, and circuits I could use to prepare for labor and during labor, and most importantly, taught us how to advocate for ourselves and communicate what I wanted during my birth experience. That preparation gave us so much more confidence going into the hospital. Her support continued immediately after I gave birth. Cheryl helped me navigate those first moments of postpartum, including helping my baby latch for breastfeeding, which meant so much to me as a first-time mom. She made sure I felt supported, comfortable, and cared for during such a new and vulnerable moment. What makes Cheryl even more amazing is that her care didn’t stop after I gave birth. Five months postpartum, she STILL checks in, not only to see how I’m doing and adjusting to motherhood, but also to ask about my baby and my husband.
