The cost of a lactation consultant in Altoona, PA can be influenced by several factors:

  • Type of Certification

International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) typically charge more than Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs) due to their advanced training and ability to handle complex breastfeeding issues.

  • Visit Type

In-home visits generally cost more than office visits or virtual consultations. Many consultants in Altoona offer telehealth options at reduced rates.

  • Insurance Coverage

Whether insurance covers the cost of a lactation consultant in Altoona, PA, depends on your specific insurance plan. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), many health insurance plans are required to cover breastfeeding support and counseling without cost-sharing, which may include lactation consultant services. However, coverage can vary depending on the insurer, network requirements, and the credentials of the consultant. It’s best to contact your insurance provider to confirm coverage details and ensure the lactation consultant you choose is in-network or meets their criteria for reimbursement.

  • Number of Sessions

Some consultants offer package deals for multiple sessions, which can be more cost-effective than paying per visit, especially for ongoing breastfeeding challenges.

  • HSA and FSA Eligibility

Lactation consulting is an IRS-eligible medical expense, meaning you can use HSA or FSA funds to cover the cost without paying taxes on those dollars.

  • Experience and Specialization

Consultants with specialized expertise in areas like tongue ties, premature infant feeding, or relactation may charge higher rates.

When looking for a lactation consultant in Altoona, PA, it's a good idea to check with your insurance provider first, as many plans cover lactation services. Interview several consultants to find one who fits your needs and budget, and ask about their specific credentials, experience, and what each session includes.

Megan Weimer

Accepts insurance

Hi!!! My name is Megan Weimer and I am an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and the founder of Love & Leche Lactation, serving families in southern Chester County, PA and the surrounding tri-state area. I support families through prenatal and postpartum feeding with a calm, practical, and evidence-based approach. With a background in Industrial Engineering, I bring a problem-solving mindset to lactation care, helping parents understand not just what is happening with feeding, but why. As both an IBCLC and a parent of two whom I breastfed, I understand how personal and emotional feeding can be. My goal is to meet families where they are, honor their feeding goals, and provide supportive, judgment-free care that helps parents feel informed and confident.

Megan at Breezy Babies was so helpful with breastfeeding! She brought her own scale to measure baby's weight before and after feeding him to see how much he ate. We discussed tongue tie relief options and breast care to avoid mastitis. She recommended things like breast gymnastics, lymphatic draining, pumping best practices when you have an oversupply, icing, and probiotics for me and baby while I’m on an antibiotic. We have already seen such an improvement with latching and breast comfort. I am so glad I reached out to Megan! And my insurance even covered the visits! Always a plus. I would 10/10 recommend Megan and Breezy Babies!!

Thank you so much for stopping by! My journey to birth work began in 2017, following the birth of my first baby. I have been a fully certified childbirth educator and doula since 2018. Additionally, I recently obtained my Certified Breastfeeding Specialist certificate (CBS) from Lactation Education Resources in October 2025. Prior to getting into birth work, I attended Notre Dame of Maryland University, where I studied biology and graduated with high honors. I have since become a mother of 2. Both of my children were born without intervention and at home. When not working, I can be found reading for pleasure, exercising, doing yoga, hiking, or gardening. I reside in Bowie, MD and serve clients within a 50-mile radius of my home.

My husband and I took Kristen’s class to support my dreams of an unmedicated birth. We learned so much about birthing naturally, avoiding interventions, and working through labor together. In the end I got my dream birth! We delivered in the hospital and confidently denied (and worked with) the medical staff to support our preferences through quoted studies, avoided all interventions (despite having my water break 2 weeks early before labor began), and gave birth completely naturally with no NICU time. They even released us after 24 hours! It was perfect and Kristen’s class played a huge part in it along with her recommended reading list. 10/10 recommend taking this class if you are planning an all natural birth! SO worth it!

My name is Kristen. I am an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and pediatric Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) with over 10 years of experience in hospitals, NICUs, community programs, early intervention, feeding therapy, WIC, and private practice. I currently spend time working in feeding/nutrition therapy for kiddos birth through 3 years old, then see clients for lactation education & support in home and virtual visits through my private practice, The Lactation Mentor. I have a strong clinical background and practice evidence-based care, but in a way that prioritizes your family’s unique needs. As a dietitian, I have had the absolute privilege of walking alongside families through every possible feeding scenario, and I believe this has shaped how I practice as a lactation consultant. I know and deeply believe that every feeding journey is unique, and there is no wrong way to feed your baby if you are given the tools and information to make informed decisions that work for your family. I have an empathetic and therapeutic counseling style, but I’m also a total goofball with a little touch of sarcasm. I never take life (or myself) too seriously, because life is too short to not be laughing! When we work together, you’ll find me making complex topics easy and fun by giving you relatable examples using a teaching style that meets you where you are. I am a fierce advocate and want you to have all the tools you need to be able to advocate for yourself. I know that, for you to be successful at this, you need to make a plan that works for you. I want to empower you to have the confidence to navigate the ups and downs of lactation even long after we’re done working together. I believe you have the right to make informed decisions in a medical system where the odds are unfortunately often stacked against you meeting your lactation goals. That’s where I come in! You’ve got this, and I’ve got you. Outside of my day to day, I am an avid reader, yogi, and artist, and enjoy exploring new coffee shops and breweries with my husband and our dog, where we live outside of Philadelphia, PA.

I cannot recommend Kristen and the Lactation Mentor enough! I struggled so much with my first baby (only made it 4 months breastfeeding - so many clogged ducts/almost mastitis even with 2 local lactation specialists) and was highly recommended by a mom friend to connect with Kristen before I had my second baby. Kristen was the BEST resource and investment for our family and I cannot thank her enough. My husband and I truly believe we have a healthier baby/mom/family because she walked with me to prepare for the hardest season of motherhood postpartum. Her program gave me the tools I needed to prepare before my baby came, but her heart was what walked with me every step. She is the most genuine, passionate, human being, and I am truly honored to know her. Preparation brings peace, and Kristen prepared me to the point where I knew what to do. My goal was 6 months breastfeeding. I am now 15 months and counting breastfeeding my little one! She helped me build my confidence as a mom and became the first in my family to breastfeed (I came from a formula only family). I have a healthy baby and am much healtheir mom, and truly think she’s making a huge difference for so many mamas and babies (alongside Taylor - I was so happy they created a program and wish this was a standard for every mom!) Thank you Kristen! ❤️😭

When I first met with my doula team, I felt an instant connection with Colleen. I felt so supported throughout my pregnancy and Colleen was always responsive, remembering my appointments and asking how they went. It always felt like she enjoyed chatting and keeping up, and she was also pregnant so we could relate! The morning I went into labor, Colleen was the doula on call, and she came around 6 am when my contractions were picking up. She set out some beautiful affirmations for me as I rocked on the ball, and she also suggested some snack ideas so I could get some food in. She remembered my birth plan and that I wanted to get to the hospital with a little bit more time than my last, and calmly used her expertise to notice cues that my labor was progressing and suggested that we head in. She supported me through contractions at the hospital with back pressure, affirmations, and encouragement. It was so helpful to just know someone else was there who knew my plan and desires and supported it all along the way so my husband could focus on my needs in the moment. When it was time for the baby to come, Colleen offered to take photos and let my mom step in and be right up front in the action. I’ll treasure the footage she got forever. I also appreciate that she supported after the birth for a few hours and helped refill my water, take photos, etc. Her follow up after was a bright spot in the postpartum period. Two years later I’ve moved away, and we still check in here and there and keep up with each other. I would absolutely recommend working with Colleen and the entire Northwest PA Doulas team.
