Congratulations! My name is Alyssa. I've been a doula since 2013. I became a doula shortly after the birth of my first born when I experienced a tremendous lack of support. I felt alone and isolated and overwhelmed with the contradicting information online. After connecting with other moms within the community, I learned that I wasn't an outlier and this experience was far too common. I studied with Penny Lyon and Ann Pollack in 2013 and became certified with DONA shortly after. Later in 2013, I began working at a local birth center as a midwife assistant to further my medical training. It reaffirmed that I was meant to be a doula serving families within my community. As a certified yoga instructor since 2006, I started integrating Prenatal yoga and doula work. It truly felt like the most comprehensive way to support families by bringing them affective and age old tools to cope with labor pains. Since 2013, I've proudly served over 1000 families. I'm the co-founder of In Joy Birth, a doula training company/agency located in Orlando, Florida. In 2023, I moved my family to the greater Denver area to be close to the mountains where I am currently serving families. I'm passionate about continuing education and am currently working on finishing my Pediatric Sleep Consulting certification. I'm also BLS/CPR certified, and Carrot approved. Hello! I stumbled headfirst into the birth world through a non birth related podcast. After hearing the host’s birth story I was awestruck. I needed to know more. The more I learned, the more I felt called to this work. I firmly believe that everyone has the right to reproductive justice, to birth the way they want to, and to be able to define their birth experience their way. Choosing your birth team is one of the most important choices you can make during your pregnancy. I completed my formal birth doula training with Childbirth International in 2024 but have been practicing since early 2023. What sets me apart is my background as an engineer. This background when combined with my birth doula training gives me the unique ability to take in information (the cues you are giving, your words and actions, your progression, your outlook on the situation, and the care providers words and actions) and move forward with a plan for the next few moments, and then reassess and move forward once again.

I studied evolutionary biology as a young adult and was planning a career shift into healthcare at the time that I became pregnant with my first child. Giving birth changed my path in life – and not just because it made me a mother. I realized how much expectant parents stand to gain from continuous, informed support during childbirth (research supports this). I knew then that my background in evolutionary biology and health sciences had come together just so that I could support pregnant, laboring, and postpartum parents. My name is Carisa Niemyer and I work as a doula and doula trainer in Colorado SpringsI found my way into doula work through the birth of my first child. My story didn't go exactly how I wanted and my baby had her own story of how she wanted to be born, as these babes often do. But after my delivery I felt so empowered and supported and loved my story. Much of the reason this was true was because of the support of a doula. That experience led me into the world of birth work and I have now been a doula for 18 years, working in both birth and postpartum, as well as training new doulas at Birthingway College of Midwifery in Portland OR as well as in my own training organization here in Colorado Springs.
