Hi, I’m Andrea Carter—founder of It Takes a Village, midwife, mother, and passionate birth advocate. Originally from Gary, Indiana, I made Dallas my home in 2015. Though I dreamed of becoming an OB/GYN as a child, it was my own powerful birth experiences that led me to step into the world of natural birth and begin my journey as a doula in 2016. ​Since then, I’ve had the honor of walking alongside over 160 families as a doula and supporting more than 300 families as a student midwife. After a traumatic birth experience with her first child, she felt an overwhelming desire to become a doula. Then, by Allah's infinite mercy, she used the knowledge gained from her AMANI Birth training during the birth of her second child to experience a natural delivery. She has expressed her desire to gain more knowledge about natural childbirth in the future. ​She is also a writer and is the author of Brishtyveja Bikel. ​She worked with Sorobor as a writer for about two years. Her writings have been published in all of Roudromoyee's books. Moreover, her work has been published by Somokalin Prokason, Muhammad Publication, and several other publishing houses. My background actually began with two degrees in computer networking, but I quickly realized my purpose wasn’t found behind a glowing screen—it was meant to be shared in the quiet, sacred spaces of human connection. In my late twenties, I began leading depression support groups for women, witnessing firsthand the incredible power of emotional healing and vulnerability. Around that same time, a deep desire to donate breast milk to mothers in need kindled a fire in my soul. I am an English teacher of seven years and my husband and I have one son. My path to birth doula work began with my own birth experience; having a doula during my pregnancy was so helpful to me and made me feel much more knowledgeable and in control of my birth. Unfortunately, the birth of my son did not go as planned for many reasons: my doula could not attend my birth, I preeclampsia complications, and my son was in a breech position. Birth is a transformation, but it can also come with trauma. My experience compelled me to become a doula to hopefully help other women have better birth experiences than I did. I’m also passionate about postpartum care; in the time after giving birth, I felt vulnerable and, although I had endured a major physical and emotional event, I was not often the focus or concern. Even amidst so much joy and love for my son, people quickly begin asking about the baby and forget to ask about the new parent. I want to be the doula that I wish I could have had!
