To my incredible doulas, Mrs. Allison & Mrs. Ashley, I cannot thank you enough for being by my side every step of the way during my delivery. You truly have a special gift. Your constant, calming presence in every single moment completely transformed the room, creating a relaxing, spa-like atmosphere that made me feel so safe and comfortable. You can’t quantify the kind of thing Jenna does. It would be inappropriate to place something like this in any kind of metric so I won’t. Instead I’ll tell you what happened. I’ll try to be brief but I make no promises. Ours is not a new story. Planned for a home birth, ended up transferring to the hospital after 30 hours of labor, finished with an emergency cesarean. What was supposed to be sunshine and rainbows turned into a 4 am car ride and 4 day stay far from home; unfamiliar, unforgiving, unexpected. I’d like to tell you about how great Jenna is for a homebirth but I can’t speak on that. I can say for certain that once we were in the medical system Jenna shed her civilian costume and the cape came out. (For sake of transparency this is metaphor, Jenna does not actually wear a cape, unfortunately…) A doula is a sort of custodian for the birthing experience, or maybe like a steward. Jenna’s familiarity with Mission’s system is beyond reasonable expectation. I mean, she’s on a first name basis with many of the nurses and plenty others I didn’t see. Nobody likes going to a party where they don’t know anybody. It wasn’t like that. It was more like we crashed a party with the most popular kid in school. Things kept happening to our advantage that in retrospect had to be the result of orchestrations behind the scenes. Jenna knows the system well enough to play it. This is not where her skills end. She somehow knows exactly what is needed before it is needed. She knows what we’re feeling before we can say it. She knows what we’re afraid of and knows exactly what we need to hear. Most of all, when the already rough waves got huge, she moved through the water like an Atlantean. We would have drowned without her. When the beeping got louder and the nurses stopped whispering and started shouting Jenna looked at me and told me what was happening. It might have been telepathic, maybe I was just reading her face. When things got blurry and I couldn’t see, I felt Jenna’s hand on my shoulder, it made it easier to breathe. When the love of my life was rushed out and all the nurses and doctors started running and but my legs all of a sudden didn’t work, Jenna got under my arm and carried me. When I was alone waiting to hear if I would be allowed in for the surgery my greatest concern would have been for my wife but the fear was fleeting because I knew that Jenna was in there with her. When they did let me in and handed me this strange naked creature and I didn’t have a single clue what to do and my wife was still unconscious, Jenna was there. Jenna knew what to do. In the following days when our baby was screaming and I couldn’t figure out what he needed, Jenna was on the phone checking in. Now it’s almost 4 weeks since and Jenna was just here, making sure everything was right. I can’t say how great Jenna would have been for our home birth because that didn’t happen. What I can say is that if you want to be prepared for anything, Jenna should be on your team. There are other doulas who offer the same things Jenna offers. There is only one person who can do what Jenna does the way Jenna does it.

Katie Mayeux

Katie Mayeux is a skilled midwifery apprentice, birth and postpartum doula, folk herbalist, and internationally recognized yoga teacher with nearly two decades of experience in women’s wellness work. She began her midwifery studies in a small village in Guatemala, apprenticing with a traditional midwife and Mayan Ajq’ij (spiritual elder). It was here that she began to see birth as a rite of passage, a spiritual initiation and a healing pathway for a lineage to purify and rewrite the script. She subsequently graduated from the School of the Sacred Wild’s yearlong herbalism apprenticeship and has more recently gained clinical midwifery experience as an advanced student through the Maternidad La Luz Midwifery Immersion Program, during which she worked at a high-volume birth center on the US/Mexico border. Katie spent fifteen years as a yoga teacher, which gave her deep insight into the body, breath, and the power of movement. She now uses that training to support pregnant families, helping them find comfort, strength, and alignment throughout the childbearing year. She teaches a prenatal yoga class in El Paso and is currently completing her certification as a Spinning Babies® Aware Practitioner. She has attended over 100 births and currently resides in WNC.

To Say Katie was a huge asset to our birth is an understatement. Katie impressed the entire birth team with over 50 years of experience. Katie is more giving and generous than anyone I have ever met. She takes time to prepare herself and make space for others, instead of jumping in with emotions. She is a safe haven on this journey. She helped me physically more than anyone at my birth. She was there during each and every contraction helping me and compressing my hips. When it was time for the birth she was brilliant enough to catch it on film! She has an intuitive nature around everything in life, and that serves in birth. My husband and I are forever grateful.

Kelly Heinerth

Asheville, North Carolina 5 years of experience

Kelly Heinerth

Hi! My name is Kelly, and I am a birth and postpartum doula in Western North Carolina. I primarily work in the Asheville and surrounding areas. I have been in birth work in this community for almost 20 years in one capacity or another, including being the office manager and light clinical support at WNC Birth Center until shortly before it closed in 2021. While most of my experience is with midwives and midwifery clients, I support families wherever they feel most comfortable, whether that's at home, the hospital, or a freestanding birth center. I launched my own practice in 2025 after finally completing an official birth doula training program that year, and I added a postpartum doula training certificate in early 2026. My favorite part of supporting birth is witnessing the transformation to new parenthood, and it doesn't matter if it's the first time or the fifth. Each time we birth a baby, we change a little (or a lot!). Walking that sacred path with someone is an honor, and I have yet to attend a birth where I didn't leave feeling in awe. I have birthed three children of my own, and each one was a uniquely powerful experience. While I do bring those experiences to the birth room, I do not let them dominate. Instead, I let them guide me to support in ways I wish I had been supported and let them teach me the art of surrender. I am also a postpartum doula, and I am very passionate about supporting parents in those early days, weeks, and months after birth. There is so much new about adding a member to the family, and we were never meant to do this alone. I greatly enjoy mothering the mother and helping other family members adjust to a new routine. I am available for short stretches of time or overnight care. When I am not working in the birth community, I am likely to be snuggling a cat or a dog, reading a psychological thriller, watching a true crime show, or knitting.

Racine Hooper

Hi, I’m Racine, a birth and postpartum doula.I work with capable, high-functioning women and their hardworking partners who want to be amazing in labor but are juggling full lives, full calendars, and a million responsibilities. You’re reading the books. You’re taking the classes. You’re doing everything people say will make you ready. But birth is unpredictable and when intensity rises, information doesn’t automatically turn into action. I prepare partners for childbirth to be steady, confident, and clear without having to tell him what to do or how to support you constantly so that you can focus on bringing your baby into the world. Because in labor, you shouldn’t have to run the room. You deserve to be supported by someone who already knows how to lead. Choosing Racine as my birth doula was an absolute game-changer. From the moment we met, her unwavering support and wealth of knowledge put me at ease. She provided invaluable education throughout my pregnancy, ensuring I felt confident and empowered as my due date approached. What truly set her apart was her dedication to building a supportive team around me, seamlessly coordinating with my partner and healthcare providers to create a holistic birthing experience. Racine’s presence during labor was a calming force, offering emotional and physical support every step of the way. Her expertise not only eased my anxieties but also enriched the entire birthing process, making it a deeply fulfilling journey. I cannot recommend her highly enough for her exceptional care and dedication. I also wanted to add that I was not a very happy pregnant woman during my pregnancy, and I had a lot going to going on in my marriage and work life. Racine didn't judge me and encouraged to to seek counseling and also referred me to a great postpartum doula who made my transition to motherhood a breeze. I can't say enough about Racine. She has a heart of gold and anyone who hires her would find that out quickly. Please hire her and you will not regret it. I wanted to add that since I couldn't come up with the money all at one time, she did put me on a payment plan and that was nice and comforting.

Lacey helped us out through a series of overnight doula stays, which we spread out over several weeks. It made the second month more manageable and helped me ( mom) recover from illness. Lacey was so helpful with our baby boy and helped us develop a more sustainable rhythm moving forward. Both I and my spouse found the added sleep to be an incredibly valuable investment! We would highly recommend Lacey! She was wonderful with our baby boy.
