What's the Cost of Hiring a Midwife in Salem, OR?

The cost of a midwife in Salem, OR, can vary depending on the services provided, the midwife's experience, and the type of care you choose. Generally, hiring a midwife for prenatal care, labor, and delivery can range from $3,000 to $6,000 for home births or birth center deliveries. This cost often includes prenatal visits, the delivery itself, and postpartum care. Some insurance plans may cover part of the cost, so it’s worth checking with your provider. For hospital-based midwifery care, costs may differ depending on hospital fees and insurance coverage. Be sure to contact local midwives or birthing centers for more specific pricing information.

The cost of a midwife in Salem, OR can be influenced by several factors:

  • Type of Midwife

Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) who work in hospital settings may have different pricing than Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) who attend home births or birth center deliveries.

  • Birth Setting

Hospital births with a midwife typically cost less out-of-pocket when covered by insurance, while home births and birth center deliveries may have different fee structures.

  • Scope of Services

Many midwives offer comprehensive packages that include prenatal visits, labor and delivery support, and postpartum care, which can affect the overall cost.

  • Insurance Coverage

Whether insurance covers the cost of a midwife in Salem, OR, depends on your specific insurance plan and the midwife's credentials. Many insurance plans, including Medicaid in Oregon, cover midwifery services if the midwife is licensed and credentialed. Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) are more likely to be covered than other types of midwives, such as Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) or direct-entry midwives. It's important to check with your insurance provider to confirm coverage details, including in-network providers, home birth or birth center options, and any out-of-pocket costs.

  • Experience and Specialization

Midwives with extensive experience, additional certifications, or specializations such as VBAC support or water birth may charge higher rates.

  • Geographic Location

Midwifery costs can vary based on the cost of living and demand for midwifery services in your specific area.

When considering hiring a midwife in Salem, OR, it's advisable to research and interview several midwives to find one who aligns with your birth plan, preferences, and budget. During consultations, you can discuss their specific services, insurance acceptance, and pricing structure to ensure you have a clear understanding of what is included and the associated costs.

In 2021, I was pregnant with my second kiddo and excited to welcome another baby at Bella Vie in Salem. I met Amanda at my second or third appointment and immediately knew she was the midwife for me. She was incredibly easy to talk to, clear about what we were looking for at each appointment and why, and always had thoughtful answers and advice regarding any questions or concerns I brought up. As a huge bonus, my 3-year-old loved her! The day I gave birth, Amanda was exactly where I needed her, when I needed her. She offered tailored support through gentle guidance and confident reminders that I was safe and so very capable. My first few postpartum hours were also a breeze because of Amanda- both my baby and I were helped to rest and closely monitored for proper signs of healing. Every question and concern was met with knowledgeable, timely care. She is an amazing human being and midwife, and I honestly cannot recommend her enough ♡

Jennifer was absolutely amazing! I cannot recommend her enough. She is an incredible chef, a knowledgeable herbalist, a skilled masseuse, and truly one of the kindest souls I’ve ever met. We feel so blessed to have found her and for everything she has brought into our lives. As a postpartum doula, she was unbelievably supportive. She helped with the baby, cooked nourishing meals for me, and did light household chores—relieving so much pressure during those early weeks. She meal-prepped any recipe I requested and offered thoughtful suggestions based on where I was in my postpartum journey.  Her herbal remedies were also a game changer. She created custom teas to support when I had low iron and low vitamin D, as well as one one to help with UTIs. Her tinctures are some of the best I’ve ever tasted—smooth rather than harsh. I especially loved the schisandra berry elixir, the lion’s mane elixir, and the cacao reishi elixir. I also used her seasonal oxymel for allergies. Her skincare products are equally amazing; her womb-warming oil and belly balm tallow both smelled incredible and made me feel so cared for. On top of all that, she is a fantastic masseuse. She even taught me a few massage techniques to help break down scar tissue from my emergency cesarean. If you’re looking for a kind, knowledgeable, and truly dedicated doula, Jennifer is your lady!

Stormy Mckinney

Hello, I’m Stormy McKinney, a birth doula serving families in Oregon. Supporting birthing people is more than a career for me—it’s a calling shaped by my own experiences, my heart for caregiving, and my deep belief that no one should ever feel alone during birth. My journey into birth work began after having two difficult birth experiences of my own. I didn’t have the support I needed, and I carried that feeling of being unheard and overwhelmed for a long time. Later, I spent years caring for my grandmother, and although I loved being there for her, after she passed I knew I wanted to help people in a different way. When I discovered what doulas do, something clicked. I realized I wanted to be the person I never had—someone who advocates, comforts, and helps birthing people relax into their own strength. I completed my Birth Doula and Postpartum care Training with Doula Love LLC in Portland, OR continued my education with additional training in trauma-informed care, oral health, cultural competency, CPR for adults/children/infants (for nurses), and basic lactation support. My approach is grounded in compassion, kindness, and a genuine desire to help families feel safe, informed, and supported. I’m a little shy at first, but I warm up quickly. I have ADHD, so every now and then I get a burst of energy—usually in a fun, optimistic way. I’m also disabled and live with POTS, but it doesn’t stop me from showing up fully for the families I support. I’m a young doula at 25, a mom of two, an animal lover, I love waterfalls, and a bit of a video-game nerd, Anima is a big part of my time. All of these pieces of me shape the warmth and understanding I bring into my work. I believe birth should feel supported, respected, and never lonely. I would be honored to walk beside you as you welcome your baby into the world.

HEY NEW BESTIE, I'M KIM AND I'M SO GLAD YOU'RE HERE. I am the owner and head doula for Birthing Days doula birth and postpartum services and education. I’m a certified birth and postpartum doula, childbirth educator, and sleep consultant. My passion is helping families feel confident, supported, and cared for through every stage of pregnancy, birth, and life with a newborn. I believe that every family’s journey is unique, and my role is to walk alongside you with encouragement, evidence-based information, and nonjudgmental support. Whether I’m guiding you through labor, helping you adjust during those tender postpartum weeks, teaching you the tools for an empowered birth, or supporting your baby’s sleep journey, my goal is always the same: to nurture your confidence and help you feel calm, capable, and cared for. A little about me: I was born and raised in Oregon, and I truly love all four seasons—each one brings its own joy and beauty. I’ve been married to my best friend for 24 years, and together we’ve raised three amazing children who continue to inspire me every day. When I’m not working with families, you’ll probably find me reading a good book, getting in a workout, or spending time outdoors camping and traveling. Disneyland has a special place in my heart, and I love creating memories there with my family. On game days, you’ll almost always catch me cheering for my teams—I’m a huge Oregon Ducks and Notre Dame Irish fan! Why I do this work: Motherhood and family life have shown me just how powerful, challenging, and beautiful these seasons can be. I know firsthand how important it is to feel supported, respected, and empowered—and that’s what I want every family I work with to experience. If you’re looking for someone who will meet you with compassion, encouragement, and a personalized approach, I’d be honored to walk alongside you on this journey

I'm a former licensed teacher that followed my passion to change my 17 year side job of childbirth education and birth doula work into a full time career. It started with earning my credentials as a childbirth educator from the Seattle Midwifery School and teaching in Portland area hospitals but morphed into doing birth doula work as people I met invited me to be part of their births. I like to say I fell into birth doula work unintentionally, but it ignited a passion to do it all that I could (while raising young children, teaching kindergarten part time, and teaching childbirth prep. WHEW! Those were busy years!) Fast forward to 2022, when I became an empty nester (letting both my scientist and my opera singing daughters fly!) and made the decision to leave the classroom and pursue birth doula work and childbirth education. I hold a Masters Degree in curriculum and instruction, so helping birthing people and their support team learn about birth is a natural and easy process for me. Once I decided to do birth work full time, I pursed further education as a birth doula (which was a review of a TINY part that I learned through childbirth educator training, LOL!) and became DONA certified as a birth doula. Through the years I have been lucky to experience a wide variety of births: medicated, unmedicated, planned and unplanned cesarean, VBAC, and so much more. I have years of experience helping those that birth, with or without neurodivergence and other challenges, find their way to empowerment and joy, no matter how their birth journey unfolds. I pull from a wide range of tools, tricks, and methods to provide what YOU would like your birth to look, sound, and feel like. From Hypnobirthing, breathing, crafting the ideal birthing environment to Spinning babies, position work, and comfort measures (comforting touch, using water & heat, leveraging pleasure for more oxytocin), I actively pursue discovering YOUR magic combination for reduced discomfort, labor length, and stress. I keep the birth space calm, safe, easy-going, compassionate, and positive, so that you can enter parenthood empowered and joyful. I provide individualized education, encouragement, and planning prior to labor, and support during the birth process to take the pressure and stress off of you and your labor support though an experience that can have a bazillion variables and may be alien to you. I keep it simple and as stress free as I possibly can so that you can be fully present and enjoy your prenatal, birth, and postpartum experience.

Having Lori with is on this journey was incredible. As first time parents it was important to us that we had someone by our side who could help us navigate pregnancy, birth and postpartum. I immediately felt at ease with Lori - she offered an non-judgmental but educated approach. When our birth plans hit a snag (breech baby) she not only helped us pivot and prepare for a whole new set of unknowns but she sat with us in the grief that came along with accepting this new journey. I was so grateful to have Lori with us for our ECV and ultimately our c-section. Having her in the OR helped calm both mine and my husbands nerves. We are so grateful for her support throughout the entire process and look forward to working with her again when we decide to try for our second!

I'm Lauren, a birth doula and photographer based in Milwaukie, Oregon, just outside of Portland. I grew up in Delaware, but have lived on the West Coast since 2017. I trained through Doula Love Portland's DONA International and OHA Approved program. My practice is trauma-informed, inclusive, and evidence-based. I honor all paths to parenthood and believe that every person deserves compassionate, culturally responsive care during their most vulnerable moments. I believe birth is not just a beginning. It is a continuation of a lineage - of wisdom, of strength, of becoming. I am here to hold space for you to make your own choices while feeling supported, safe, and seen.

As a first time mom, I was searching for someone who could be an advocate for my husband and I. Someone who could guide us through the birthing process and the many decisions that came with it in a moment of high emotion. Lauren was the calming and sound voice of reason and compassion that we needed. In the prenatal period she patiently answered all my questions, and even sent me literature on things we discussed for further research. Together, we built my ideal birth plan, and she created an easy to follow worksheet that I could reference and bring with me to the hospital. When the time finally came, and the birth plan completely derailed, Lauren remained calm and was there every step of the way. During an extremely long and exhausting labor process, Lauren was there providing support through suggestions, positioning, counter pressure, etc. And with every change in the birth plan and decision that came along the way, Lauren helped us understand our options and gave me peace of mind that every decision made was founded in fact and not emotion. From an emotional standpoint, Lauren also kept reminding me that I was one step closer to meeting my baby. This also helped calm my anxious mind as things progressed. After an unexpected C-section, we finally held our baby, and though things did not go as planned, we took solace in knowing that we made the best choices for our family. I cannot thank Lauren enough for the support she provided, and can't imagine how my husband and I would have dealt with the situation without her. If you are a first time mom, or even a second or third, I highly recommend her and her doula services!

I had the pleasure of working with Lorrie as my doula for the birth of my first child, and I truly cannot recommend her enough. From the start, she put my mind at ease, building my confidence through her deep knowledge of the birthing process. She helped me navigate my options to create a flexible birth plan that felt exactly right for me. Our weekly virtual prenatal yoga sessions were a lifesaver—not only for stress reduction but for mental preparation. Lorrie tailored every pose to my needs and taught me breathing techniques that became essential during labor. She even prepared my support team so they knew exactly how to show up for me. My goal was to labor at home as long as possible. Thanks to Lorrie’s calm guidance through intense contractions, I arrived at the hospital 8cm dilated! Even when things took an unexpected turn resulting in an emergency C-section and a NICU stay, Lorrie stayed by my side. She gave me the tools to advocate for myself and provided constant encouragement during a difficult time. Lorrie provides holistic, culturally appropriate care that every birthing person deserves. I’m now a healthy mama to a healthy baby boy, and I can't wait to have her support me again for my next child.
