My journey into lactation support and doula work has been a blend of personal experience and professional dedication. After witnessing the challenges many new mothers face with breastfeeding, both through my own journey and while serving families as a doula, I realized the critical need for better support systems, especially here in San Antonio. Current statistics show that breastfeeding in lousina is the 2nd to lowest in the country and black women are have the lowest success rates. Subsequent to breastfeeding disparities are the lack of resources of breastfeeding support and education. Diversity in education and cultural sensitivities play a huge role in the success of breastfeeding. To be transparent there’s a need for more women of color within the network of breastfeeding support, this will have a positive impact and break a lot of the barriers that exist in the trust and care amongst black women. In a recent study data showed that along with a desire for support and education on breastfeeding African American women also wanted to see and felt that they’d benefit from having a woman of color as a breastfeeding specialist. As a African American Women myself I want to bridge the gap in care to the community and increase breastfeeding rates and education. As an African American mother of 4 that has had my own breastfeeding journey riddled with its own difficulties and lack of professional support, I set out to not only become educated in lactation specialist but to be the support to the community that so deeply is in need. I’m the 1st and ONLY Black IBCLC In my area , after doing very intense research into Diversity within Lactation Education and Support ; I am working closely with non black providers to help break the barriers that exist. It’s an honor to serve , and share my expertise. I will use my Masters of Arts in Health and Wellness with a focus in Human Lactation to continue to change the biases and lactation social injustices that impair so many Black families. I work with all families and specialize in the Black Family Barriers.

Lisa knew from a young age that she wanted to be a nurse. She graduated with her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in Fall of 2012, from SFASU. In 2013, she started her career working for a Neuro-Oncologist in Houston who specializes in treating brain cancers. She married her husband, Brian, in 2014. After she experienced breastfeeding difficulties with her own tongue and lip tied baby her journey towards supporting breastfeeding dyads began. In 2017, She returned to work and switched fields of nursing, leaving private practice and entering into the hospital setting. She worked as a postpartum mother/baby nurse at St. Luke’s and quickly became part of the lactation team, having the privilege to enter into many families' first feeding moments and experiences with their newborns. In 2018, she gave birth to her first son, who was diagnosed with a rare congenital heart defect and who spent 1 month in the level IV NICU. During this time, she experienced exclusive pumping for the first 3 weeks until she was allowed to breastfeed him in the NICU. She continued to pump while separated until he came home, where she was able to breastfeed him. In 2020, she became pregnant with her 3rd child. During her pregnancy she obtained her CLC while working towards obtaining her IBCLC. She gave birth to her second son in the Fall of 2020. She has been a licensed IBCLC since January 2021, and later joined Bayou City Breastfeeding that Spring. Lisa has successfully breastfed all three of her children through various challenges including returning to work. More recently, she has become certified with the Child Sleep Institute after having difficulties night weaning her own 2 yr old at the time. The Child Sleep Institute has given Lisa the tools needed to help support families experiencing difficulties in their child’s sleep.

After 36 years as an RN & IBCLC Lactation Consultant in the hospital in Maternal Child units I retired to focus on the mothers and babies in my community & my family. I have received TOTs certification (Tethered oral tissues) Tongue and lip ties have become my specialty. Mastitis and clogged ducts treatment, breastfeeding multiples & pumping care is also very important. I do in home and virtual consultations.
