Joan Sherwood

I am Joan Sherwood, founder of Peaceful Beginnings To You. My calling to become a doula was born from a personal experience. During the birth of my child, I was left alone in a hospital room without any support. My spouse and brother were sent home because I was not in active labor. My water had broken, so I was admitted, and I faced the daunting process of labor alone, in a secluded area until it was time to push. This experience, where I delivered a 9 -pound, 2-ounce baby without my loved one's present, ignited my passion to ensure that no other person would have to endure such solitude. My journey as a doula began 25 years ago when I assisted a family member through labor. Since then, I have been a source of support and guidance for family and friends, which eventually led me to pursue certification as a birth doula through DONA International. I am deeply committed to holistic birth and postpartum care, and my extensive training reflects this dedication. My education includes a Family Development Credential, studies at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, the Center for Homeopathic Education, and the Swedish Institute College of Health Sciences. I am also a certified Calm Birth Instructor, Infant Massage Instructor Trainer, Womb Sauna Practitioner, and have received postpartum training from Indigemama, BirthMama, Traditional Postpartum Practitioner, and Birth Arts International. My approach to doula care is centered on the needs of the laboring person. I come with no preconceived notions, and I remain as fluid and flexible as possible to meet the evolving needs of each individual. In addition, to running my private doula practice, I have provided doula care to underserved communities as a doula and doula mentor for a federally funded program in Brooklyn.

Joan was my doula for both my pregnancies, one in 2014 for my now 8 year old and again during the pandemic for my 2 year old. I highly recommend Joan she provided such consistent support during both pregnancy, while birthing and postpartum. I was so fortune because Joan is just naturally resourceful and intuitive and she was right by my side every step the way. To this day I consider her such an empowering and beautiful human being and I am thankful that she was with me on my journey into motherhood -- I would choose her again and again and again!!!

Working with Ivy Haven Birthwork was one of the best decisions I made during my pregnancy. From the very beginning, I felt so seen, heard, and genuinely supported. This wasn’t just about information or checklists — it was about having someone walk beside me with calm, grounded presence every step of the way. Throughout my pregnancy, I always felt like I had a safe space to ask questions, process emotions, and explore my birth preferences without any judgment. Every visit left me feeling more prepared, more empowered, and more connected to my body and my baby. During labor and birth, Ivy Haven showed up with such quiet strength and intuition — anticipating what I needed before I even had to ask. Whether it was hands-on comfort, encouraging words, or just holding space, the support was everything I hoped for and more. I truly don’t know how I would have navigated it all without that presence. And postpartum… wow. Having someone check in on me — not just the baby — made all the difference. Ivy held space for my recovery, my questions, my tears, and my joy. From helping with practical tips to simply sitting and listening, I felt truly cared for in those tender first weeks. Now, with my baby girl nearly four months old, I still carry the strength and grounding I gained from my experience with Ivy. I’m endlessly grateful.

Simone has been holding space for expecting and postpartum families for over 10 years. Birth has a powerful way of healing and transforming you, and her first birth did just that. The ability to have 2 empowered births the way she wanted, gave light to the need for advocacy, education and doula support amongst the birthing community, especially black families. Simone is a mother, doula, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, childbirth educator and infant sleep educator. She has been teaching and mentoring doulas along the way and excited to dive deeper into holding the hands of the next generation of birth workers.

I cannot say enough good things about Simone as our night doula and lactation consultant. From the moment she entered our home, she brought a sense of calm, compassion, and expertise that made an immediate difference in our postpartum experience. As a second-time mom navigating recovery, sleep deprivation, and feeding challenges, her presence was nothing short of a gift. She supported our entire family with such gentleness and professionalism. Her overnight care allowed us to get desperately needed rest, knowing our baby was in kind, capable hands. Her lactation guidance was equally invaluable. She offered evidence-based support with zero judgment—troubleshooting tummy issues, providing reassurance, and giving practical tools that worked. Thanks to her help, I went from overwhelmed and in pain to confident and empowered. I did not feel a bit of judgment when I chose to go from breastfeeding to formula due to my baby's tummy issues. She listened deeply, responded thoughtfully, and truly respected our parenting values. She didn’t just care for our baby—she cared for us. If you're looking for someone who is not only highly skilled but also emotionally attuned and reliable, I wholeheartedly recommend Simone. She’s an absolute gem and a vital part of our early parenting story.

A Truly Exceptional Doula Experience Hiring Aisolen Marcial was hands down one of the best decisions we made during our pregnancy journey. From the moment we met her, we felt instantly at ease. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Cheryl and the support she provided throughout my pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience. From the beginning, Cheryl and I connected so well, and I immediately felt comfortable with her. As a first-time mom, that was so important to me. I was in a new city, delivering at a new hospital, and trusting a care team I had never worked with before, so having someone in my corner who I genuinely trusted made such a difference. One of the things I appreciated most was how much Cheryl prepared both my husband and I before I went into labor. She helped us create our birth plan, taught us different exercises, positions, and circuits I could use to prepare for labor and during labor, and most importantly, taught us how to advocate for ourselves and communicate what I wanted during my birth experience. That preparation gave us so much more confidence going into the hospital. Her support continued immediately after I gave birth. Cheryl helped me navigate those first moments of postpartum, including helping my baby latch for breastfeeding, which meant so much to me as a first-time mom. She made sure I felt supported, comfortable, and cared for during such a new and vulnerable moment. What makes Cheryl even more amazing is that her care didn’t stop after I gave birth. Five months postpartum, she STILL checks in, not only to see how I’m doing and adjusting to motherhood, but also to ask about my baby and my husband. She remembers our names, asks about each of us, and genuinely cares about how we’re doing as a family. She has also made it a priority to hear and understand my experience as a first-time Black mother, which has been incredibly meaningful to me. Her support has never felt like simply providing a service and moving on once the baby was born. The connection we built is genuine, and it’s clear that Cheryl truly cares about the mother, the baby, and the family as a whole. I’m so grateful that Cheryl was part of such an important chapter in our lives. She made me feel heard, prepared, cared for, and supported during one of the biggest transitions of my life. If you’re looking for a doula who is knowledgeable and compassionate but also someone who will genuinely get to know you and care about your family beyond your delivery day, I HIGHLY recommend Cheryl. ❤️
