Hi, I’m Emma—founder of Solstice Birth Co, and a birth worker with over a decade of experience supporting families through pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. My journey into this work began in a deeply personal way—witnessing birth as a child, I was struck by how powerful, raw, and transformative it was. That early experience stayed with me and ultimately led me down the path of midwifery. Years later, I went on to have my own home birth with my daughter in 2009—an experience that further rooted my belief in the body’s innate wisdom and the importance of feeling safe, supported, and truly seen during birth. I went on to train as a traditionally trained midwife (CPM, LM), working hands-on with families across California and building a strong clinical and intuitive foundation in the midwifery model of care—one that honors pregnancy and birth as physiologic, sacred, and deeply human experiences. At this time, I am no longer offering home birth midwifery care. Instead, I’ve shifted into a more integrative and supportive role—one that allows me to walk alongside women and families in a deeply personalized way through Solstice Birth Co.

Kaiayo Z. Shatteen (they/them/theirs) is a Queer Parent of two young adults. They live on the Unceded Land of the Lisjan Ohlone People in Oakland, CA, where they are a Certified Professional Midwife, Reproductive Justice Advocate, and an LGBTQIA2S+ Equity Consultant. They give thanks to their Ancestors for guiding them daily. Kaiayo has a deep commitment to ending the injustice that puts BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+ and Gender Non Conforming communities at the bottom when it comes to positive birth outcomes, access to inclusive health care, and equity in the workplace. Kaiayo is also a contributor to the book, The Majestic Place: The Freedom Possible in Black Women’s Leadership.
