I know what it feels like to need help in the middle of the night and have no one to call. I’m a Colorado native who spent my twenties and early thirties on the East Coast — far from family, far from my roots, and eventually, far from sleep. I had three sons without a village nearby. My husband, bless him, could sleep through a train crash (and a newborn baby crying!). Paternity leave was laughably short. Breastfeeding was hard. The nights were long. And I did it alone, in the dark, wishing desperately that someone would just come and take the baby for a few hours so I could be a person again. That experience is why I do this work. I returned to Colorado 12 years ago and eventually found my way to postpartum doula work — because I lived the need for this role. When I support a new mom through the night, I’m not reading from a textbook. I’m drawing on years of feeding babies at 2am, soothing a baby who won’t settle, and knowing exactly what a mother needs to hear (and what she doesn’t) when she’s running on empty.
