Birthwork found her when she was working on a research project about women giving birth in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Following her project, she immediately got trained as a birth doula and hit the ground running. She was a volunteer doula for the first part of her doula career while simultaneously working as a health educator in non-profit clinics in both Minneapolis and Austin. Amelia eventually adhered to her calling and shifted to working in birthwork full time. For Amelia, birth is a sacred and ceremonial part of life. Howdy! I’m so glad you’re here! Birth and postpartum are some of the most vulnerable times in someone’s life and if we work together I’m likely going to see you naked to some degree, so it’s only fair you know about me too! I grew up in the Dallas area and have been in Austin since 2014. I came for college and south Austin has always been my home. I was a nanny for a family while I was working on my undergraduate degree in social work with minors in psychology and women & gender studies - they introduced me to what a doula was. I am one of the lucky people on this planet who has truly found their calling and can honestly say they love their job. I’m also a Licensed Social Worker in both Texas and Colorado and focused my studies in graduate school on perinatal mental health and mood disorders and the mind-body connection of somatic therapy. I believe the birth of a child, and rebirth of humans in the transition to becoming a parent, are sacred and beautiful experiences. Knowing birth is strenuous on the physical body as well as requiring an immense amount of mental strength, I bring in knowledge from regulating your central nervous system while still focusing on mind-body-soul-connection. Having a strong support to provide knowledge, hold space, and honor the process is key, and what I love most about birthwork. I am also passionate about the postpartum period to help families navigate the transitions of a new parental identity, preparing parent’s relationship for changes, caring for themselves, and setting up realistic expectations for what the future will bring. Hey there! I’m Ana, a Salado, TX-based doula, mama, and self-proclaimed birth nerd. My journey into birth work actually started before I ever got pregnant when I began learning about natural family planning and realized just how much we, as women, aren’t taught about our own bodies. We’re often told to put that part of ourselves on hold — to not think about fertility, birth, or motherhood until “later.” But in doing that, we lose touch with something so deeply feminine and powerful. My journey to motherhood was life-changing in the best way and it opened my eyes to how little support and information is actually offered to pregnant and postpartum women. I found myself thinking, Why didn’t anyone tell me this? Is this normal? Am I doing this right?? That’s when I knew — I wanted to be that support for other women. The one who says, “Yes, this is normal,” or “Here’s what your options are,” or “You’ve got this.
