Lindsey van der Lee

6 years of experience

Welcome - my name is Lindsey, and I'm the doula behind Blue Hazel Birth Services. Supporting people through their birth journey has been a dream of mine for over a decade and I feel blessed to have been living this dream for the past 2 years. I have a deep passion for nurturing and empowering those around me through challenging transitions, and my love of all things birth has combined with this to lead me into a career as a birth doula. I believe that birth is a sacred experience for the birthing family and my role as your birth doula is always to support and empower you through your experience - this means creating and holding space for you, to your level of comfort with the birth experience. It means never overshadowing or replacing the connection that is built between partners during the birth experience - only ever heightening it. I believe that all birthing people and their partners have the right to support through their birth experience, should they desire it. This means that I support both couples and single birthers of all backgrounds without discrimination. No matter where you are on your journey towards birth, you are welcome here. Lindsey was the emotional and physical support that I wish I would have had with my first baby! Birth is an out of this world experience, and Lindsey’s touch and voice brought me back into my body. She was so sweet and nurturing and I felt so well taken care of the whole time. I couldn’t have done it without her.

Brittney is a certified birth and postpartum doula trained under DONA International and practicing since 2017, is a proud member of both the Doula Association of Edmonton and DONA International. With expertise in attending both home and hospital births, she holds valuable experience in supporting VBAC, twins, and brings personal insight from her own journey, including home VBAC, infertility, and trauma. In addition to her current doula certifications, Brittney has a passionate focus on VBAC clients. Recognizing the unique needs and desires of mothers seeking a vaginal birth after cesarean, she is currently the only VBAC Certified Doula in the Edmonton area which underscores her commitment to providing specialized support and expertise for women navigating the journey of VBAC. Her passion for birth work is deeply rooted in her personal experiences and a love for endurance sports, coupled with her resilience in overcoming cancer. As a mother of two miracle boys, Brittney defied odds after surviving leukemia in 2010 when she was told she may never conceive. Grounded in her Christian faith and through the power of prayer, Brittney's determination, patience, and a profound emotional struggle ultimately led to the conception of her first child. Facing numerous medical interventions during her cancer battle, Brittney recognized the importance of reclaiming control over her body during childbirth. Despite a first birth ending in a c-section, the overall prenatal, labor, and postpartum experience remained positive, thanks to the support of a wonderful midwife and labor companion. For her second birth, she achieved an empowering home water birth with the assistance of her midwife and doula. Brittney firmly believes in the strength and power of all women to manifest the birth they envision. As a doula, her goal is to provide unwavering support, fostering a peaceful birthing environment that transforms this experience into a moment of empowerment. Drawing from her personal journey, Brittney is dedicated to helping other mothers create empowering and positive birthing experiences, ensuring they emerge with a profound sense of strength, confidence, and self-discovery. Through compassionate guidance, Brittney strives to make each birth a transformative and inspiring journey into motherhood. Brittney is certified through DONA International. She has completed both the DONA Birth Doula and Postpartum Doula training in Edmonton, Alberta, along with Introduction to Childbirth for Doulas and the Basics of Lactation Management for Doulas. She also holds her Advanced VBAC Doula certification, is a Placenta Encapsulation Specialist and has completed her Lamaze Childbirth Educator training.

Brittney was such a great doula, definitely recommend her. She was very knowledgeable, informative, and had our backs from start to finish and even helped remind us of what we wanted when we got overwhelmed or were in a rush to make a decision.

Josie Willems

Josie Willems

Welcome to my journey! Growing up on a farm in Wheatland County, Alberta, Canada, taught me the value of hard work and perseverance early on. My dream of becoming a birth worker may have seemed distant at times, but it became a reality when I discovered the impactful role of a doula. I signed up for the Birth Belongs to Women mentorship, learning through women is truely so important to me. Being present for the miraculous moment of birth is beyond words, and I take great pride in supporting women during such vulnerable times. I firmly believe that every woman deserves to be honoured and cared for, and I am dedicated to providing gentleness, kindness, and reassurance throughout the process. Birth is not just about the arrival of a new baby; it is equally about honouring the mother and her unique experience. When I’m not attending births, I’m busy caring for my animals, including my goats and Texas Longhorn/Highland cattle. I cherish my time with my dogs, Mena and Major, and my calf, Violet. I also enjoy unwinding by the fire, painting, capturing beautiful moments through photography, or playing the piano. My mission is to serve women as a sister and nurture them as a true friend in their incredible journey. I am serving Strathmore and the greater Calgary area

Josie is a fantastic doula! She joined my support team close to the end of my pregnancy and I wish she was with us sooner. Although we had her for a short time, it felt like welcoming an old friend into our home. Josie is kind, caring, and very easy to get along with. She was so wonderful with supporting our whole family including my young daughter. With a planned home birth which ended up being a hospital birth, Josie did a great job at presenting my options, and advocating for my desires. I’m so grateful she made the drive to the hospital to support us there where we had the birth we wanted despite the location change. She was a comforting presence through the whole process. Her support was especially important during postpartum where she would check in on us during my recovery and our transition to a family of 4. She was very helpful with breastfeeding support as well. All in all, Josie is a wonderful person and added such peace and calm to our second birth experience.

Just before my due date, I found out I needed a C-section because my baby was breech. I wasn’t prepared at all and felt so stressed, especially since all of our family lives abroad and we had no extra help. I decided to look for a doula only a few days before the surgery. Honestly, the idea felt a bit strange to me at first because I’m a very active person and it’s usually hard for me to ask for help or feel comfortable with a stranger in my home. I scheduled a trial day with Alla, and I immediately felt a strong connection. She is such an amazing person and it’s so clear how much she loves her job and loves babies. Beyond being professional, she was so much fun to talk to! She is incredibly dedicated and did absolutely everything she could to make sure I was resting. She took care of so many things around the house without me even having to ask, helped with the baby’s first bath, and prepared healthy food and delicious desserts. She supported me, the baby, and the household all at once. She turned the first week - which is usually the most difficult and painful - into a truly positive experience. I can’t recommend her enough; if she is available, don’t think twice!

I had the honour of having Mary as my doula for 2 of my pregnancies, one of which was twins! There were a lot of times of uncertainty because I was immediately classified as high risk but I was determined to have my twins naturally and with the least amount of interventions possible. I chose to go against the doctor’s advice for a c-section and follow my intuition to have a home birth even when met with adversity. She was extremely helpful because I needed someone I could vent to and she was supportive to the decisions I made while also informing me of all possible outcomes. She was extremely respectful to my birth plan and always gave great advice when I had questions. We ended up having a beautiful twin home birth and both babies are healthy and thriving. At times through my labour it was extremely difficult but she was there with me and encouraging me every step of the way. I couldn’t have asked for a better doula and I’m so grateful for her. She was there for me all throughout my pregnancy, birth and postpartum care and I couldn’t have done it without her. Thank you Mary!

I firmly believe everyone deserves compassionate support, which is why I offer a sliding scale for my services—making doula care accessible to all families.
