Hi there! I'm Chelsea – a wife, stay-at-home parent of two, certified birth and postpartum doula, and babywearing educator based in Connecticut. With over two decades of experience working with children and families, my journey includes a master's degree in education and 11 years of teaching music to students from PreK through grade 12. My path to becoming a doula was inspired by the isolating and challenging nature of the postpartum months. Having navigated this journey myself, I realized the importance of support during this period. I aim to alleviate the isolation many face by offering guidance and understanding. Having been the first in my friend group to experience parenthood, I understand the complexities and uncertainties. My role is to provide a compass, steering you away from the confusing and sometimes overwhelming information available online. Join me in creating a supportive community, where I offer education, solidarity, empowerment, strength, and empathy to ease your transition into parenthood

Chelsea was referred to me by a postpartum doula in my first trimester. She was the only birth doula I interviewed because I knew right away that she was the right woman for the job: A no-BS, science-based, level-headed millennial with just the right dose of sarcasm. Ahead of birth, Chelsea visited with me and my husband twice to give us crash courses in labor/delivery, Spinning Baby techniques, and Baby Basics 101 (changing a diaper, installing and using a car seat, swaddling, and babywearing). Thanks to her prep, we felt far less anxious going into labor. At the hospital, it was clear that she has mastered the perfect balance of calm encouragement and strong advocacy with medical providers. She always stays professional, but is never afraid to push back on your behalf. I went through a pretty long and difficult labor but thanks to the support of Chelsea and her colleague Rachel, who joined us for the second half through delivery, I never felt afraid, powerless, or unsafe. After birth, we continued to retain Chelsea's services as long as we could as an overnight/postpartum doula, allowing my husband and I to get much-needed rest as we both went back to work immediately. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Chelsea for any doula needs.

I am a full-spectrum doula, offering support in reproductive health, birth and labor, and postpartum care in Connecticut and Rhode Island. I love doula work because I deeply value the one-to-one relationships I build with clients, walking alongside them during one of the most important and transformative experiences of their lives. My passion for supporting, educating, and empowering people giving birth comes from my commitment to addressing the maternal and infant health disparities that disproportionately affect Black women. My goal is to help all birthing people—especially Black women—feel confident, informed, and supported by: learning to trust their bodies, learning to trust themselves to make informed decisions and advocate for the birth experience they desire, and receiving culturally responsive, non-clinical emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and after birth. It would be an honor to support you on your birth journey. I work collaboratively with you and your support team to create an experience where you feel confident, informed, and surrounded by care, love, and respect. I welcome you to schedule a free, 30-minute consultation to help us get to know one another, decide if we're a good fit and so that I can also answer any questions you may have. Marissa helped us get ready for the arrival of our first baby. We had two meetings before our girl arrived a little earlier then expected. The first meeting was getting to know each other and Marissa gave us tons informative videos we were able to watch and a few social media accounts to follow with very helpful exercises, stretches, and general partner bonding. Marissa encouraged me through the ending of my pregnancy to stay active and hydrated also to practice breath work whenever I had a moment! Marissa was always quick to respond to me or my husband's text messages or calls Even when we had the silliest of questions! She recommended a wonderful book for my husband so that he was as supportive as possible in the delivery room. Our second meeting we went over some of the best positions to be in during labor and my Birth plan. The day that I was induced, Marissa was Incredibly supportive via text message until she was able to get to the hospital. She made sure that we were asking the right questions to our providers to make sure that we were getting all the info we needed to make informed decisions. During labor Marissa was very Helpful in reminding me to breathe and counting for me during contractions. She captured some of the most beautiful photos for my husband and I during this time as well! My birth felt easier because of the suggestions Marissa gave us and the reminds in option I had in each stage of labor and birth!

Heidi Terpening

Heidi Terpening

27 years of experience

Hi, I’m Heidi Terpening, CFSD, BPCE, founder of Azure Coast Doula. I am a maternal-child health clinician with over 27 years of nursing experience supporting individuals and families across the full continuum of care. My nursing career has taken me through NICU, labor and delivery, postpartum recovery, maternal-child health, pediatrics, community health, and school nursing. In these roles, I have supported families through routine and high-risk pregnancies, medically complex births, NICU admissions, postpartum recovery, and the many transitions that come with welcoming and caring for a new baby. These experiences have given me a deep respect for both the clinical and emotional sides of perinatal care, and a strong commitment to evidence-based practice, patient advocacy, and family-centered support. Over time, I came to understand that families often need more than medical care alone—they need continuity, reassurance, education, and someone who can help them feel grounded during moments of uncertainty. This understanding led me to full-spectrum doula work, where I now combine my clinical background with continuous emotional, physical, and educational support. Through Azure Coast Doula, I walk alongside families during pregnancy, birth, postpartum recovery, pregnancy loss, NICU stays, and medically complex situations. My role is to provide calm, consistent presence and clear, evidence-based information so families can feel informed, supported, and confident in their decisions. I strive to meet each family exactly where they are, honoring their unique needs, values, and experiences without judgment. In addition to doula support, I offer placenta encapsulation, newborn education, and hands-on newborn care guidance. These services are rooted in my nursing experience and are designed to ease the transition from hospital to home, helping parents feel more prepared and confident as they begin life with their new baby. The name Azure Coast Doula was inspired by the calm strength and resilience of the Adriatic coast of Croatia—a place that reflects the energy I hope to bring into every family’s experience. My work is grounded in clinical expertise, steady presence, and compassionate care, with the belief that every family deserves to feel supported, respected, and never alone in their journey. It is an honor to support families through some of life’s most meaningful and transformative moments.

My midwife story began with the home births of my own children. They inspired me to share the transformative experience of owning my birth, finding my own path, and becoming Me. I began my home birth midwifery journey through traditional apprenticeship, where I was more or less self taught. I embarked on a journey which took me halfway across the world to a charity birth clinic in the Philippines. Then I returned again to my mini-farm in Connecticut where I raised and home schooled my three children and ran a small community practice. Over a span of 15 years, my experiences included solo practice, busy group practice, and birth center, blending of traditional midwifery with formalized education. In 2025, I graduated from Midwives College of Utah and earned my credential as a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM). Currently I work in solo practice, supporting families in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and eastern Connecticut with holistic, personalized pregnancy care, home birth, postpartum and newborn care with all visits in your own home.

When I was looking for a midwife for my second pregnancy and first home birth, I wasn’t sure what to look for. After interviewing a few midwives, Cynthia really stood out to me. From the beginning, I felt like she genuinely wanted to get to know me and understand my previous birth experience. She made me feel heard and supported right away. I especially appreciated that she offered a FaceTime meeting so I could see her beforehand, and I loved how she included my daughter in that first interaction. Having a three-year-old, it made such a difference that Cynthia offered home visits, it took away the stress of bringing a child to appointments. I knew I wanted a home birth, but I had never truly envisioned what that would look like. Cynthia was incredibly patient and helped guide me in creating the birth experience I wanted. She supported me in having the kind of pregnancy and birth that felt right for me. She is very knowledgeable and was always available to answer questions or just talk things through. One of my favorite parts was how she included my daughter in every appointment, letting her help, listen to the baby’s heartbeat, and taking the time to talk and play with her. It made the experience so special for our whole family. When it came time for my birth, I had a “go with the flow” mindset, and Cynthia fully supported me in that. I felt safe, respected, and cared for the entire time. I also truly appreciated the postpartum care. It was personal, calming, and far more attentive than the standard six-week follow-up. Cynthia made sure both baby and I were doing well with multiple visits after the birth. I had such a wonderful experience with Cynthia. I would highly recommend her to anyone considering a home birth, and I will absolutely be using her again in the future.

Kara is simply the best. Her support, knowledge, ability to just jump right in to any scenario a drowning new mom might be experiencing - both me and my children are blessed to call Kara a part of our village. I think the most refreshing thing about Kara is her calm demeanor. It’s fair to say I’m often on edge when she walks in and when she walks out the next morning, I’m well rested knowing my baby has been in the best hands. Highly recommend!!!

I enjoyed working with Dy very much. I highly recommend her services and appreciate everything she did for me throughout my pregnancy. From prenatal visits answering all my questions and making me youtube playlists to all the amazing help and support in the delivery room. I'll never forget what she did for me.
