I have always wanted to be in birthwork, since I had my first child at 18, but never knew where I would fit in. A few years ago I learned what a doula was and knew that that was where I belong. I love all things pregnancy and childbirth and love to learn more about it. I have worked in restaurants my whole life so I am very good at multi tasking and thinking on my feet and solving problems. I am a newer doula, however I have been helping friends, co workers and family forever with childbirth. Hello, I am a certified postpartum doula. I have worked with babies/children since I was 13. I babysat and nannied throughout my teenage years. In college I worked at numerous daycare facilities (newborn-preschool). I earned my bachelors degree from the University of North Texas in early childhood education. I taught for 5 years in 2nd grade and in PE. In 2008 we welcomed our first (of six) baby. I now have 5 boys and a daughter that I homeschool. My youngest is now six and I miss the newborn season!! I recently got my certification to be a nighttime postpartum doula. My goal is to support the new momma (and family) and help them to enjoy and cherish this quick season of having a new baby. My first postpartum client was when I was 18 yrs old - before the word doula was ever known. I have 40yrs of experience working with newborns, new parents, as an educator, postpartum doula, nanny, lactation educator, and newborn care specialist. I have worked in the 3rd largest hospital in the country within the maternity unit as a nurse assistant/patient tech. I also sleep condition and train babies to sleep well at night as long as the parents follow through with instructions when I am not there. Baby can sleep between 10-12hr straight. I also travel with the families anywhere they go within my time frame of my contract. Passport/TSI ready. Many families have me between 6weeks-4months. I’m Riley, the doula behind Root and Vine. This work is my calling — rooted in a deep respect for the strength and sacrifice of women, the transformation of birth, and the sacredness of new life. I’m a birth and postpartum doula, trained through DONA, and support families across the DFW metroplex with compassion, evidence-based knowledge, calm presence, and a deep trust in the process of labor. I am an English teacher of seven years and my husband and I have one son. My path to birth doula work began with my own birth experience; having a doula during my pregnancy was so helpful to me and made me feel much more knowledgeable and in control of my birth. Unfortunately, the birth of my son did not go as planned for many reasons: my doula could not attend my birth, I preeclampsia complications, and my son was in a breech position. Birth is a transformation, but it can also come with trauma. My experience compelled me to become a doula to hopefully help other women have better birth experiences than I did. I’m also passionate about postpartum care; in the time after giving birth, I felt vulnerable and, although I had endured a major physical and emotional event, I was not often the focus or concern. Even amidst so much joy and love for my son, people quickly begin asking about the baby and forget to ask about the new parent. I want to be the doula that I wish I could have had! The role of postpartum doula is to mother the mother, to educate and encourage new parents, and ensure the new family is thriving together. My love of caregiving and my passion of supporting other mothers is combined in the role of postpartum doula.

Inspired by my own reproductive journey, I feel called to do birth work in this phase of my life. I have the most wonderful five year old daughter and being her Mom is absolutely the best part of my life, however my journey to her did not come without its challenges. From struggling with pregnancy loss, to a pregnancy that required me to be on full bed rest for my entire third trimester, and ultimately delivering via c-section. I am well versed in needing supportive around the clock care. And most importantly I count that care as one of my biggest blessings. I believe that care is what allowed me to bring a beautiful baby to this world safely and transition to motherhood with confidence.
